Challenges for beginner teachers
On 15 April 2019, some 100 newly recruited diocesan secondary school educators boasting five years of experience – or less – in the teaching profession were convened to a one-day seminar articulated around the challenges that they face on a daily basis. Heads of schools and other officers in leadership positions, such as the Senior Educators, were also in attendance. The keynote address, delivered by Dr Om Varma, Director of the MIE, focused on the nature of professional support to be afforded to beginner teachers and on the mentor-mentee rapport as part of the induction process. A roundtable on classroom management facilitated by teachers with experience both in the mainstream and the prevocational was also held. However, the biggest past of the day was dedicated to breakaway sessions on specific aspects related to teaching and learning, such as: i) Catholic social teaching ii) Positive discipline iii) Mother tongue-based multilingual education iv) Project leadership & v) The primary school learner’s context.
